    Designed to introduce students to the basic fundamental skills of jogging proper techniques for stretching the different muscles, proper warm-up, work-out and cool-down.   • MOVP 0164 - Bicycling


    Credits: 1

    Designed to give the student an over-all view of road biking, rules of the road, safety riding/racing technique, clothing, equipment, and basic bike maintenance. During the first few classes, part of each session will be dedicated to lecture and discussion on relevant topics, and the remainder of each class will be allocated to a ride in the local area. During the remaining weeks, the entire class session will be dedicated to riding. Upon completion of the course, the student will have learned safe and effective road biking techniques, improved his/her fitness, and acquired basic bike maintenance skills. Participants are required to provide their own quality Road Bicycle, helmet, clothing and shoes.

    Designed to teach effective means to teach common outdoor skills. Focus on skills most associated with camp craft and travel relative to winter and spring activities. In order to accomplish these goals, students will learn technical knowledge about camp craft, appropriate teaching methods, and develop physical skills necessary to be a competent outdoor skills instructor.

    Designed to provide students with an opportunity to achieve some proficiency in six water stunts as applied to basic springboard diving, seven basic or required dives, and several optional dives.

    Introduction to the use of map and compass in traversing of a variety of terrain. Fieldwork, including an introduction to competitive orienteering, and GPS is included.

    Designed to increase the student’s sense of personal confidence, mutual support and level of agility and physical coordination. To increase an appreciation of the outdoors through a series of co-education group exercises, initiative tasks and high level maneuvering responsibilities.     Various methods of water exercise for conditioning are presented with focus on proper alignment and technique, principles of conditioning, and assessment. Emphasis on improvement and maintenance of personal fitness. Must be comfortable in deep water.

  
  • MOVP 0182 - Lifeguard Training

    Designed to give students a complete course in preparation for Lifeguarding. It will give the students training in American Red Cross Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and Lifeguarding. It will also promote responsibility for protecting the safety of a patron in an assigned aquatic area. It is to instill a moral and professional obligation to prevent hazards and enforce rules regulations of an aquatic area.

  
  • MOVP 0183 - Relaxation Techniques

    Provides students with practical application of relaxation theory. Students will learn relaxation techniques ranging from proper breathing to progressive relaxation methods to autogenics. The application of relaxation techniques as a method of stress management will also be addressed.

  
  • MOVP 0184 - Water Safety Instructor

    Designed to prepare skilled swimmers to teach the American Red Cross Swimming courses. The course is taught twice per week for one semester. A minimum of 30 hours are required by the Red Cross. At the completion of the course the student will be able to: demonstrate comfort in the water, demonstrate basic survival skill in the American Red Cross basic swimming strokes and Advanced Life Saving techniques, teach the mechanics involved in the basic strokes and life saving techniques.

    Offers an opportunity to experience the physiological benefits gained through swimming by means of both aerobic and anaerobic techniques. To achieve these benefits of swimming, the individual will learn about stroke mechanics, breathing patterns and establishing proper stroke rhythm. To acquire fitness through aerobic and anaerobic techniques, the individual will understand the concepts of distance and interval swimming.

    This course is an introduction to water-based activities such as whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, or stand up paddle-boarding or land-based sports such as ice climbing, back-country skiing, or mountaineering.  If it is a water-based activity, students will develop efficient paddling skills in a moving water environment.  Reading the water and trip planning will also be covered.  If it is a land-based activity students will develop efficient climbing and/or skiing skills in a back-country environment.  This course will involve field trips.  Fees may be required.

    An overview of species counterpoint will lead to a study of tonal counterpoint in the style of the 18th Century. Analysis of representative works will complement the written work in two to four voices, culminating in efforts in such forms and techniques as the invention, canon, invertible counterpoint, and fugue.

    An introduction to the repertory of dance drumming and vocal music of the Ewe people of Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Students are introduced to a wide range of topics to West African culture, philosophy, and daily life, and learn to perform this indigenous music in an ensemble setting. Repertory will include Atsiagbekor (traditional), and Gahu (traditional), and Gahu (updated). No prior musical training is necessary.

    The principal purpose of the course is for the student to become acquainted with, and to practice using, the methods and resources necessary to do research in the field of music. In addition, the student is expected to show improvement in writing skills and demonstrate the organization necessary to write a high-quality research paper. The goal of the course is for the student to be able to produce independently successful research papers in seminars and as graduate students.

    Review of music history from medieval to the twentieth century. This course is designed to satisfy deficiencies indicated by the transfer student diagnostic entrance examination in music history. Removal of deficiency requires a grade of C or higher.

  • MUSC 0221 - Introduction to Music Education

    This introductory course covers the history, curriculum, current topics, and developmentally appropriate methodologies in music education across PreK-12 grade levels.  Teacher candidates will be introduced to instructional and classroom management practices that reflect high expectations, accommodate a range of interests and abilities, and promote a safe learning environment in which diversity is respected.  Participants will explore best practices for creating diverse and engaging lesson activities, assessment and reflective practice, communicating with families and encouraging family participation, and collaborating with colleagues and the community.  25-hours of documented field experience in the public schools are required.

    This course is an introduction to the alexander Technique, a unique methods to attain greater ease of movement. Students will learn to recognize subtle ways in which habitual patters of movement contribute to physical tension, anxiety and even injury. This discovery is achieved through explorations leading to awareness and an understanding of the inter-relationship of an individual’s thoughts and physical condition.

    A specialized course for vocal music majors which explores details of vocal placement, resonance, diction and physiology. Includes techniques for training children’s voices and the adolescent changing voice.

  • MUSC 0322 - Elementary Music Methods


    Credits: 3

    This field-based methods course emphasizes teaching strategies, curriculum development, materials, repertoire, and developmentally appropriate practices for teaching music in elementary school.  Teacher candidates will review relevant theories and research to inform best practices for teaching elementary music, and create effective curricula and lesson plans employing a variety of developmentally appropriate assessment methods.  During field experiences and in peer teaching, students will have the opportunity to practice instructional and classroom management strategies that engage and motivate learners, accommodate a range of interests, abilities, and needs, and promote positive and mutually respectful behavior.  Focus will also be placed on reflective practice including the use of assessment data toward improvement of practice, and building collaborative relationships with parents, colleagues and the community.  Teacher candidates will develop pedagogical skills and strategies that foster music literacy, listening, movement, composition, and improvisation.  25-hours of documented field experience in public schools are required.

  • MUSC 0328 - Practicum: Music K-12


    Credits: 12

    A full-time apprenticeship with one or more co-operating practitioners at two different grade levels (elementary, secondary), supervised by college music faculty. A minimum of 300 hours in the practicum will be documented. Periodic on campus seminars are required.

  • MUSC 0329 - Music Practicum Seminar


    Credits: 1

    This seminar is taken concurrently with the practicum and provides an opportunity for music candidates to reflect on their teaching experiences and examine a variety of topics in music education.  Candidates will collaborate to review and evaluate pedagogical strategies, curriculum, and assessments linked to student learning.  They will explore creative solutions to situations in their teaching, examine current research in the field, and review educational innovations.  Strategies for building professional relationships among school and community members are also discussed.

  • MUSC 0332 - Instrumental Music Education Methods


    Credits: 3

    This field-based methods course surveys appropriate instrumental literature for elementary, middle and high school programs.  Students develop skills that will enable them to create and maintain a collaborative and cross-curricular learning environment.  They will learn various standards-based teaching methods specific to child development and diverse learning styles as appropriate to the instrumental classroom setting, create effective curricula and lesson plans, and learn rehearsal techniques that employ a variety of assessment strategies specific to the instrumental classroom.  Students will demonstrate teaching strategies through practical teaching projects and field-based labs, and will write reflective evaluations.  Drawing from a variety of classroom management strategies, students will prepare lesson plans with effective routines and procedures that engage and challenge all learners, accommodate a range of needs and abilities, and promote positive behavior.  25-hours of documented field experience in public schools are required.
