The course is conducted entirely in French. The language acquisition component focuses on the following: a) improving students' facility in speaking and writing French within "real-life" contexts; b) analyzing the linguistic components of a speech sample: phonological, morphological, and syntactic; and c) expanding vocabulary and improving pronunciation and the use of grammatical structures. The "area studies" component compares and contrasts the cultural values and attitudes of the Francophone and Anglophone worlds.
