BIOL 0390 - Teaching Secondary School Biology
This course emphasizes inquiry-based instruction in a culturally-diverse secondary biology classroom. Students will be introduced to the Next Generation Science Standards, will design lessons using innovative pedagogical techniques, and will develop a range of formative and summative assessments. Students will be expected to construct a thematic unit that demonstrates their ability to teach biology at the secondary level. Students will practice their planning and implementation skills as a function of proper classroom management and demonstrate those skills during in-class presentations and during the field experience. Course activities will emphasize reflective teaching and encourage effective lesson planning for all secondary students. A 30-hour pre-practicum field experience in a secondary biology classroom is required. This course may count toward a 0300-level Biology major requirement.
