HIST 0269 - Sports in American HistoryCredits: 3 This course examines the social, political, economic, and cultural impact of "sport" in American history, as well as the early historical developments that led to the creation of organized, modern sports. Sports have played a pivotal role in the making and remaking of economic, political, and social institutions in the United States. This course is not intended to be a vehicle for discussions of sports trivia, but instead uses sports as a lens through which to investigate American history. This course is meant to foster discussion amongst those interested in history on a broad scale, whether a student is an avid sports fan or not. Students will examine primary and secondary sources, analyze conflicting interpretations, and explore the roles of race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, and other identity markers in both sports history and American society. Prerequisites: Minimum Sophomore standing required. |
