MATH 0254 Foundations: Data Analysis and GeometryCredits: 3 An introductory course in the foundations of data analysis and geometry for elementary school teacher candidates. The course focuses on the deep mathematical ideas and concepts required to support PreK6 students in making sense of mathematics. Topics in data analysis will include: understanding, constructing, and computing data graphs and numerical summary measures; probability models; and statistical inference. For geometry students will make sense of tessellations, area, surface area, volume, dimensions, art and mathematics, and symmetry and angles. Students will develop a conceptual understanding of the course material in a learning environment that models the pedagogical foundations of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics and the NCTM Standards.
