MATH 0612 - Mathematical Knowledge of Teaching - Advanced

Designed to familiarize the secondary school teacher with recent fundamental changes in middle and secondary school mathematics. Topics are chosen to satisfy the DESE Subject Matter Knowledge Standards, MTEL requirements, and NCTM standards. An activity-based format will be used to create a learning environment that fosters an exploration of the processes of mathematics. The focus will be on deeper conceptual understanding of K-12 mathematics.  Topics may include: the structure of our number system, different procedures of the basic operations, representations and applications of linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential and trigonometric functions, proofs and applications of geometric ideas, complex numbers, proofs of trigonometric identities, and modeling and solving real world problems using different techniques.
