EDUG 0529 - Dyslexia: Foundation Knowledge, Assessment, and InstructionCredits: 3 This course addresses the critical components of literacy development and provides the foundational knowledge of the nature and needs of students at-risk for and with dyslexia. The focus of the course is on prevention efforts through Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), the effects of dyslexia on learning to read and write, and appropriate assessment and instruction for students at-risk for and with dyslexia. This course addresses principles and practices of evidence-based literacy assessment and prevention/intervention for students with dyslexia, including how the brain learns to read, various challenges that students may encounter as they develop as readers, effective prevention/intervention in various components of literacy, and the issues involved in designing a comprehensive literacy prevention/intervention program.The course will also address the definition of dyslexia, and relevant laws, guidelines, and policies at the state and federal levels. The learning experiences provided in this course align with the Education Department's commitment to Critical Engagement with Diversity and Social Justice.
