CHEM 0109 - General Chemistry I

Credits: 4

An introduction to modern chemistry, this first course in a two-course general chemistry sequence covers the foundational concepts of atoms, bonding, the mole concept, stoichiometry, reactions, periodic properties, gas phase chemistry, and molecular structure. Students will evaluate and solve relevant chemical problems using both conceptual and quantitative approaches and connect chemical concepts to everyday life. In laboratory, students will work in teams, test hypotheses, design experiments, make observations and measurements, and evaluate and report results. Topics will be related to ethics, laboratory safety, and current societal and environmental impacts.
