PHSC 0101 - Everyday Physics: Understanding the Natural World

Credits: 4

A conceptual, largely nonmathematical exploration of physical principles anchored in everyday experience. Familiar phenomena and devices are examined to appreciate how physics impacts daily life and shapes the natural world. The concepts of motion (linear, rotational, and oscillatory), sound, heat, light, and electromagnetism are introduced. Physical processes in household appliances and at the planetary scale are explored. Laboratory involves computer simulations, data collection and analysis with smartphones and computer-based probes and other forms of technology. Three hours lecture, and three hours laboratory per week.
