PHSC 0115 - General Physics I

Credits: 4

An introduction to mechanics and the fundamental concepts of work and energy. Topics include kinematics in one- and two-dimensions, Newton's laws of motion, rotational motion, and torque. The principles of conservation of linear and angular momentum are next, followed by work and energy. Laboratory involves computer simulations, and data collection and analysis with smartphones and computer-based probes. Practical applications of theoretical concepts are emphasized throughout. Mathematical prerequisites are high school algebra and trigonometry; calculus is not required. Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week.
