Credits: 3

This course considers some of the principal texts and themes in the political thought of the ancient Greeks, including tracing the origin and early development of civic democracy and other political and social structures. We begin with the emergence of political discourse and organization in Aeschylus' Greek tragedy Oresteia, and continue with the themes and evolution of political and social arrangements in the work of Plato and Aristotle, the two foundational theorists of the western tradition.
