MUSC 0103 - Music in Culture

Credits: 3

This course is organized thematically according to the many ways that music is and has been used in human societies. It brings together examples from classical, folk, and popular traditions from around the world. The course offers a thorough grounding in the cultural and historical context of each work and a close examination of its characteristics. Our identity is flexible and constantly negotiated, moving from one cultural circle to another as we pass through adolescence into adulthood, enter the workforce, travel, get married or have kids. Music is often used to reinforce these identities or to form stronger links to cultural heritage or to express our individuality and independence. This class will explore these notions through the following topics:  Music as Storytelling, Music and Ethnicity, Music and Gender, Music and Spirituality, Music and Politics, Music and Film, and Music and Dance.

Prerequisites: Music majors and minors only or permission of instructor.
