Reading and analyzing literature by Black American authors, students will develop understanding of contemporary Black American people's lives, cultures, histories, and traditions of resistance. Students will learn about authors' backgrounds; the cultural, political, and historical contexts of their work; their creative approaches; and some shared thematic concerns and literary strategies that characterize Black American literature. Students will develop skills for sharing what they learn with their communities.
