PSYC 0627 - Mental Health and the Criminal Justice SystemCredits: 3 The purpose of this course is to review the interface between mental health and the criminal justice system. In particular, this course will cover laws relevant to mental health, various co-response models, procedural justice, sequential intercept model, community and school strategies, how mental health is addressed in courts, how mental health concerns increase the chance of interacting with the criminal justice system, and mental health in juvenile justice. In-class discussions will address how mental health counselors and law enforcement officers can best collaborate to address mental health and crime in the community through prevention, de-escalation, and diversion. |
