LCUL 0201 - Women in the Spanish-Speaking World

This course studies the intersected realities of what it means to be a woman in the Spanish-speaking world through the analysis of cultural products created by women from a variety of Spanish-speaking communities. More broadly, the course seeks to dissect the ways in which womanhood is socially constructed and how the history of colonization plays a distinct role in reference to Spanish-speaking communities at large. The overarching goal is for students to develop a sense of cultural empathy and understanding and to learn more about how they themselves fit into these broader social groups. By focusing on cultural products created by and for these marginalized groups, students will be able to explore how to act as conscientious, ethical, and responsible members and/or allies of these communities.
