HIST 0326 - Age of Chivalry

Credits: 3

This course explores the origins, development, and legacy of chivalry in medieval Europe from the fall of Rome to the 14th century. Students will explore how chivalry’s main components (military, social, and ethical) developed and flowed together to form a coherent, yet fluid social construct that governed relations between rulers and their subjects, elite men and women, nobles and commoners, and lords and their dependents. Students will learn how medieval knighthood, the idea of nobility, and the idea of male-female love developed over the centuries and how literature evolved and flourished.

Prerequisites: Minimum Sophomore standing required.
