HIST 0306 - U.S. Immigration History
Credits: 3
This course examines the history of immigration in the United States from the colonial era to the 1980s. The idea that the United States is a “nation of immigrants” is one of the fundamental premises of American history and popular culture. Despite this, immigrants have faced numerous challenges and nativist (anti-immigrant) movements have been powerful throughout U.S. history. This class will explore how immigrants have been treated differently because of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, “disability” status, as well as other “identity markers”. Lectures and texts will survey the unique experiences of different immigrant groups (African, Asian, European, and Latino) and examine the interactions between immigrants and the nation.
Prerequisites: Minimum Sophomore standing required.
