ECON 0309 - Health Economics

This course provides guided analysis with an economic lens of the core concepts needed to understand health and health care issues in both the developed and developing world. This course emphasizes the differences between markets for health and health services and other goods, with a particular emphasis on the role of government and market failure. Students will discuss the theoretical and empirical aspects of key health economics issues, including the demand for health and health services, supply side concerns, health insurance, the provision of public goods, and related topics. Students will be encouraged to rigorously examine the role of the market for the provision of health and health services to determine how public policy can influence these markets and their outcomes in different settings. Students with strong quantitative skills who have not met prerequisite conditions are encouraged to seek permission of the instructor to enroll in this course.

Prerequisites: ECON 0102  or permission of instructor.
