HIST 0283 - Modern Africa

Major themes discussed in this course include: slavery, colonialism, Islam in Africa, modernization theory, resistance and independence movements, women’s experiences, U.S. foreign policy, and Africa in the 21st century. These themes are explored in comparative context using select countries in southern, western, central and eastern Africa as case studies. Through historical documents, literature, maps, oral histories, and film, students will acquire a grounding in African history.
