GPS 0335 - Real Estate and Economic Development for Planners

Credits: 3

Urban and regional planners play a key role in helping communities to articulate economic development goals and to create plans and strategies for achieving these. Planners work closely with community groups, civil society, local and regional governments, and the business community to identify promising pathways for the increase of tax revenues, employment, real estate development and quality of life, guided by sustainability’s triple bottom line of economic, ecological, and social health. In this course students gain experience in the range of tools and techniques at planners’ disposal for supporting economically vibrant communities including public participation, finance and budgeting, the creation of downtown development districts, revitalization, adaptive reuse, infill development, capital improvement programs, and comprehensive planning, among others.
