EDUC 0347 - Creative Arts for Young Children Credits: 3
This course offers the theoretical background and practical knowledge essential to supporting learning and development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers through engagement with the creative arts. Students will explore developmentally appropriate practices and cultural influences on early learning and examine universally designed, culturally sustaining methods and materials in music, movement, drama, the visual arts and storytelling. Topics include the role of teachers and caregivers in partnering with families to support children’s linguistic, affective, cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development through the creative arts; the impact of personal experiences in the creative arts on young children’s self-awareness, identity, and acceptance of difference; and methodologies for introducing young children to diverse forms of art and artistic expression. The learning experiences provided in the course align with the Education Department’s commitment to Critical Engagement with Diversity and Community Building. Field hours may be required depending on the student’s program of study.
