GPS 0105 - Introduction to Community Planning Credits: 3
Planning is an interdisciplinary field addressing many functions of communities: housing, jobs, sustainability, transportation, shopping, design, public involvement, recreation, natural resource protection, public services, and more. Everyone including professional planners, residents, business owners, government agencies, and interest groups, has a role to play in the process of planning communities. Whether you will be a professional planner or not, the issues we address in this course will impact your life. We will explore the history of planning, methodologies of planning, tools and techniques of planning, planning ethics, and various concentrations within the field. We will also address how planning impacts both communities and individuals. Through projects, readings, reflection, films, and more we will investigate the many aspects of planning and the current challenges within this field to creating sustainable urban environments.
