HNRS 0101 - Honors Discovery Seminar Credits: 1
A 1-credit introductory seminar designed to foster a successful transition to life in college and develop a sense of belonging for new incoming Honors students. With the mentorship of current Honors students who have undergone specific training to serve effectively as peer mentors, students will be introduced to university resources, expectations, and policies; helped to identify faculty, staff, and student groups whose interests align with their goals; and be provided with opportunities for social engagement and professional development.
Through an engaging, experiential learning environment, students in the Honors program are equipped with skills to manage the demands of their academic and personal lives effectively, enhancing skills and values such as time management, responsibility, perseverance and independence, while also being challenged to engage deeply and critically with complex ideas to foster self-awareness, reflection, and personal growth. In addition, this course emphasizes the integration of the Honors value pillars of (1) academic excellence and intellectual curiosity, (2) community engagement and leadership, and (3) equity and social justice, empowering students to actively practice them throughout their university experience.
This seminar is a requirement of the Honors program and should be taken during the first year of study. This course can be waived for transfer students and current students entering the program in their sophomore year with approval of the Honors Director.
Prerequisites: Must be a member of the Honors Program in good standing to enroll.
