EDUC 0251 - Play in Early Childhood Education

Credits: 3

This course will examine the relationship of play to the growth of the young child, birth to five, in the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains of development.  Emphasis will be placed on theories of play, current research in the area of play, the impact of the learning environment on children’s play, and everyday applications of play for diverse groups of children in inclusive settings. The concept of play will be reviewed from a global perspective and will be evaluated in terms of culturally responsive pedagogy. This course encourages the rethinking of the concept of free play to promote a more equitable approach to planning and guiding play in child care and early education programs. The learning experiences provided in the course align with the Education Department’s commitment to Diversity, Social Justice, Scholarship and Reflection.
