EDUC 0252 - Policy & Advocacy for Child and Family Well-Being

Credits: 3

This course will provide an overview of educational policy affecting children, youth, and families, with a special focus on diverse perspectives in the field. We will use historical, cultural, and sociopolitical lenses and theoretical frameworks to examine the strengths, needs, and histories of children and families, especially those who have been marginalized and oppressed. Students will learn to examine policies that have caused disparities in educational attainment and healthy development, and then learn to critically analyze educational reforms proposed to alleviate such disparities. Policy areas explored include issues such as socioeconomic inequity and poverty, the universal Pre-K debate, multicultural and anti-racist education, the school-to-prison pipeline, school readiness, children’s rights, the early childhood workforce, and other issues germane to local, state, and federal policy landscapes. Students will practice evaluating international early childhood, youth, and family policies as a comparative exercise to imagine new possibilities for U.S. policy and practice. This course will help prepare students for advocacy and leadership on behalf of children, youth, and families. The learning experiences provided in this course align with the Education Department’s commitment to Diversity and Social Justice.
