HIST 0130 - U.S. Civics History: American Democracy & Government Credits: 3
This is a Documents-based WISE (Westfield’s Integrative Student Experience) survey course in United States history and government, with a specific focus on the making, evolution, and history of American Democracy and American democratic institutions. As a WISE civics-history course, students will engage deeply and collectively with a broad range of difficult historical questions through an analysis of significant and foundational historical Documents concerning often conflicting and/or contested notions of American identity, liberty, and freedom. Through an analysis of contending story lines, varying perspectives, and divergent voices, this thematic-based history course will examine contested ideas surrounding what is “American Democracy,” who are “the people,” and how do we achieve equality and “form a more perfect Union,” all debates which are vitally important to students’ lives today.
