Law Enforcement and Mental Health Co-Response Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Graduate Program Departments

The law enforcement and mental health co-response certificate program is for people currently working in law enforcement or mental health counseling who wish to develop specialized knowledge on community mental health and the criminal justice system. In particular, many police departments are moving towards developing co-response models where knowledgeable officers and clinicians work together when responding to mental health-related calls. Our curriculum includes: current theory and research on mental disorder and crime; laws, policies, and procedures relevent to mental health and the criminal justice system; rapid mental health and risk assessments; and building skills that prevent and intervene in crisis situations. Students will also complete a hands-on capstone project.

Admission Requirements

Students applying for the graduate certificate program must have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or psychology, or a related field, with a minimum grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in the last two years of undergraduate studies from an accredited institution. Other graduate admissions tests, such as the GRE or Miller will not be required for the certificate program. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling or Criminal Justice. Students accepted into the certificate program who later wish to complete a master’s degree program may be required to meet admission criteria for that degree program. This may require another application to that program.

Applicants who want to be considered for the Graduate Certificate in Law Enforcement and Mental Health Co-Response must submit to the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education:

  • Application for admission
  • Narrative statement
  • Undergraduate transcripts
  • Two letters of recommendation describing the individual’s potential to complete the program

Note:

Completion of the certificate program does not qualify a person for licensure.
