HNRS 0201 - Intro to the CHP Credits: 2
This 2-credit seminar is intended to prepare students in the Honors Program for their Commonwealth Honors Project (CHP), an independent research or creative project, which will be completed over two consecutive semesters in the junior or senior year. Successful completion of the Commonwealth Honors Project is required to graduate as a Commonwealth Honors Scholar.
Students may begin the Commonwealth Honors Project as early as the first semester of their Junior Year. This course should be taken in the academic year prior to beginning the project. Students should consult with the Honors Program Director or other Honors Advisor as well as their major advisor(s) to determine the best timeline for their Commonwealth Honors Project.
This preparatory seminar will engage students with multi-disciplinary approaches to the research process, including:
- Narrowing down a research/creative topic into specific research questions or goals
- Exploring the existing literature or professional contributions in the project field
- Identifying a gap where the student could make a unique contribution to the growth and development of the field
- Writing a review of the literature and other professional contributions to inform the direction of the project
- Defining the parameters of the project in a formal proposal, including disciplinary-driven methods of inquiry, format of the final project, and timeline for execution
With Instructor guidance, and consultation with current students working on the CHP, students in this class will be advised on how to connect with a faculty mentor who could serve as the Primary Project Advisor. Guest speakers from the Library, Reading and Writing Center, and Institutional Review Board will supplement course instruction to provide support with the culminating project proposal.
This seminar is a requirement of the Honors program and should be taken prior to beginning the Commonwealth Honors Project. This course can be waived for transfer students with the approval of the Honors Director.
Prerequisites: HNRS 0101 , Sophomore or Junior status, and Honors Program member.
