Movement Science/Physical Education

  
  • MOVP 0329 - Basic EKG and Stress Testing


    Credits: 1

    Through observation and experimentation, students will examine the anatomy and physiology, electrical conduction, and arrythmias of the cardiovascular system and its relationship to activity tolerance and its chemic burden.

    Prerequisites: BIOL 0237  or permission of instructor.
  
  • MOVP 0330 - Sports Promotion


    Credits: 3

    An introduction to the issues, principles, and skills of sports promotion pertaining to the educational, recreational, and professional sports arenas. Focus will be on the structure and economic impact of the sports industry and the acquisition of skills required to effectively promote a sports program.

    Prerequisites: Junior standing.
  
  • MOVP 0331 - Sport and Exercise Psychology


    Credits: 3

    This course will require students to examine the theoretical foundations of sport and exercise psychology, as well as introduce students to the psychological skills commonly utilized in applied sport and exercise psychology. The research methods commonly utilized in sport and exercise psychology also will be considered.

  
  • MOVP 0332 - Nutrition and Human Performance


    Credits: 3

    This course is designed to investigate and understand how a combination of nutrition and exercise can lead to better health and performance, and how foods are converted to energy, energy sources used during exercise/performance, and optimal nutrition for exercise and sport. Topics will include: healthful dietary guidelines, bioenergetics, human metabolism during rest and exercise, the six classes of nutrients and their roles in exercise, body composition (body fat and muscle mass), weight management, and nutritional ergogenic aids.

  
  • MOVP 0334 - Organization and Administration in Athletic Training


    Credits: 3

    Students will explore leadership, management, and organizational theoretical foundations as applied to Athletic Training and related healthcare fields.  Specific emphasis is placed on emergency planning and risk management, Athletic Training advocacy, inter-professional communication, insurance and reimbursement, human resources management, facility design, and legal issues in the practice of Athletic Training.  Learning experiences will be focused on application through civic engagement.

  • MOVP 0335 - Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health


    Credits: 3

    Selected research techniques and designs, with emphasis on planning, conducing, and reporting of research; applied statistical analysis and interpretation of data from the fields related to physical activity and health.

    Prerequisites: MATH 0108 .
  
  • MOVP 0337 - Athletic Training Research and Clinical Decision Making


    Credits: 3

    Athletic Training Education program course with focus on clinical decision making and research in prevention, evaluation, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illness through clinical experiences and research projects.

  • MOVP 0348 - Practicum In Physical Education: Elementary Prek-8 Half Semester


    Credits: 6

    The half-semester practicum is a supervised experience for pre-service teachers in an elementary school.  The experience requires that candidates demonstrate professionalism, teach classes, develop an understanding of school and community and the links to student learning.  Emphasis is on the continuity of well-structured lessons, units, and daily evaluation; meeting rigorous standards that inform practice; inclusively and safety for all; and addressing needs of all students.  Supervision and evaluation are conducted by the school practitioner and physical education faculty from the university.  Individual visits and conferences will be a part of the evaluation and reflective practice.

    Prerequisites: Advanced standing and Permission of Instructor

  • MOVP 0349 - Practicum II in Physical Education: Elementary (PreK-8)


    Credits: 12

    The full semester practicum is a supervised experience for pre-service teachers in an elementary school.     Credits: 6

Emphasis on continuity of lessons, units, daily evaluation. Supervision by cooperating school practitioner and Physical Education faculty from the University.   • MOVP 0352 - Practicum II in Physical Education - Secondary


    Credits: 12

    Supervised observation and student teaching in a secondary school, conduct of classes and extra-curricular activities, development and understanding of school and community. Emphasis on continuity of lessons, units, daily evaluation. Supervision by cooperating school practitioner and Physical Education faculty from the University.   • MOVP 0353 - Clinical Experience in Athletic Training


    Credits: 6-12

    Course requires working with a certified athletic trainer in another school for practical experience. Duties to include: administering first aid, administration of therapy treatment, observation of work of the clinical supervisor and duties assigned by the clinical supervisor.

    Prerequisites: Advanced standing.
  
  • MOVP 0355 - Practicum Seminar: Physical Education


    Credits: 3

    The practicum seminar is taken concurrently with the practicum and offers a series of formal meetings that provide the candidates an opportunity to reflect on their experiences.  Candidates will collaborate to review, critique, and evaluate assignments and assessments linked to student learning.  they will explore creative solutions to situations in their teaching, consider ongoing research in the field, and develop professional relationships.  Identification of educational innovations, problems and suggestions for the present and future needs of candidates, school personnel, the community and physical education curricula are a pertinent part of the seminar experience.

    Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and advanced standing.
    Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Practicumm (MOVP 0348, 0349, 0350 or 0352).
  
  • MOVP 0360 - Senior Seminar in Sports Medicine


    Credits: 3

    Provides students an opportunity to examine contemporary issues and explore an area of selected interest relevant to the sports medicine field.  Requirements include completion of a portfolio documenting the student’s academic and professional development and presentation of a research project.  Students will also be required to participate in dialogue session with MOVP 0213.

    Prerequisites: Intermediate Standing and Senior Standing
  
  • MOVP 0390 - Senior Seminar in Exercise Science


    Credits: 3

    This course provides an apportunity for senior-level Exercise Science students to discuss current issues n the field as well as transition to professional practice or graduate school.  Students will participate in a civic enggaement program aligned with the Exercise Is Medicine mission to connect clinical care with community care.  Preparataion for professional certification examinations and post-graduate professional development will also be examined.

    Pre/co-requisite: MOVP 0320   and a minimum overall GPA of 2.80
  
  • MOVP 0395 - Internship Sports Medicine


    Credits: 6

    Provides the student enrolled in the Sports/Medicine Concentration with an opportunity to do in service work with public and private agencies/institutions in the community. The students will work under the supervision of the agency/institution director and will be supervised by a faculty member from the MSSLS Department. Students will be expected to assist in the development as well as conduct of Sports Medicine programs offered. Students are expected to fulfill a minimum of 280 clock hours. Individual conferences and group seminars are held in addition to the 280 clock hours.

  • MOVP 0396 - Special Topics in Movement Science


    Credits: 1-3

    This course offers an in-depth study of a specialized area within the Movement Sciences.  Course content will vary according to the area of specialization of the instructor and the interests of the students.  May be repeated if courses content differs.

    Prerequisites: Intermediate standing for majors; permission of instructor for non-majors.
  
  • MOVP 0397 - Exercise Science Capstone Internship


    Credits: 4-12

    Provides the student enrolled in the Exercise Science Concentration with an opportunity for further practical experience in a related field. The students will work under the supervision of an agency/institution director and will be supervised by a faculty member from the MSSLS Department. This capstone experience will include a major and minor project, case study, journal reflection and formal presentation. Individual conferences and group seminars are held in addition to the clock hours.

    Prerequisites: Advanced Standing.
  
  • MOVP 0398 - Internship Adventure Education Leadership


    Credits: 6

    Provides the student enrolled in the Adventure Education Leadership concentration with an opportunity to work with public and/or private agencies/institutions in the community conducting wilderness programs. The student will work under the supervision of the agency/institution director and will be supervised by a member from the MSSLS department. Students will be expected to assist in the development as well as the conduct of the Adventure Education Programs offered. Students are expected to fulfill a minimum of 280 clock hours. Prerequisite: Advanced standing and completion of courses in the Adventure Education leadership concentration with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and current First Aid certificate.

    Individual research and independent study related to a particular phase of Movement Science, health or recreation with approval from the Movement Science Department.

  • MOVP 0164 - Bicycling


    Credits: 1

    Designed to give the student an over-all view of road biking, rules of the road, safety riding/racing technique, clothing, equipment, and basic bike maintenance. During the first few classes, part of each session will be dedicated to lecture and discussion on relevant topics, and the remainder of each class will be allocated to a ride in the local area. During the remaining weeks, the entire class session will be dedicated to riding. Upon completion of the course, the student will have learned safe and effective road biking techniques, improved his/her fitness, and acquired basic bike maintenance skills. Participants are required to provide their own quality Road Bicycle, helmet, clothing and shoes.

    Designed to teach fundamental strokes and skills of each game, singles and doubles, play and strategy, rules, tournament conduction and teaching techniques.

    Designed to teach effective means to teach common outdoor skills. Focus on skills most associated with camp craft and travel relative to winter and spring activities. In order to accomplish these goals, students will learn technical knowledge about camp craft, appropriate teaching methods, and develop physical skills necessary to be a competent outdoor skills instructor.

    Designed to provide fundamentals of touch football. Includes rules, strategy, skills and terminology. Emphasis on skills by defensive position, throwing and running.

  
  • MOVP 0171 - Diving


    Credits: 1

    Designed to provide students with an opportunity to achieve some proficiency in six water stunts as applied to basic springboard diving, seven basic or required dives, and several optional dives.

  
  • MOVP 0172 - Orienteering


    Credits: 1

    Introduction to the use of map and compass in traversing of a variety of terrain. Fieldwork, including an introduction to competitive orienteering, and GPS is included.

  
  • MOVP 0173 - Initiative Games and Ropes


    Credits: 1

    Designed to increase the student’s sense of personal confidence, mutual support and level of agility and physical coordination. To increase an appreciation of the outdoors through a series of co-education group exercises, initiative tasks and high level maneuvering responsibilities. Emphasis will also be placed on safety at all times.

  
  • MOVP 0180 - Rock Climbing

    Climbing ground, rocks, etc. where proper climbing technique is required. Will include climbing, belaying, knot tying, climbing calls, roped ascents, and repelling.

  
  • MOVP 0181 - Aqua Aerobics

    Various methods of water exercise for conditioning are presented with focus on proper alignment and technique, principles of conditioning, and assessment. Emphasis on improvement and maintenance of personal fitness. Must be comfortable in deep water.

  
  • MOVP 0182 - Lifeguard Training


    Credits: 2

    Designed to give students a complete course in preparation for Lifeguarding. It will give the students training in American Red Cross Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and Lifeguarding. It will also promote responsibility for protecting the safety of a patron in an assigned aquatic area. It is to instill a moral and professional obligation to prevent hazards and enforce rules regulations of an aquatic area.

  
  • MOVP 0183 - Relaxation Techniques


    Credits: 1

    Provides students with practical application of relaxation theory. Students will learn relaxation techniques ranging from proper breathing to progressive relaxation methods to autogenics. The application of relaxation techniques as a method of stress management will also be addressed.

  
  • MOVP 0184 - Water Safety Instructor


    Credits: 2

    Designed to prepare skilled swimmers to teach the American Red Cross Swimming courses. The course is taught twice per week for one semester. A minimum of 30 hours are required by the Red Cross. At the completion of the course the student will be able to: demonstrate comfort in the water, demonstrate basic survival skill in the American Red Cross basic swimming strokes and Advanced Life Saving techniques, teach the mechanics involved in the basic strokes and life saving techniques.

  
  • MOVP 0185 - Swimming for Fitness


    Credits: 1

    Offers an opportunity to experience the physiological benefits gained through swimming by means of both aerobic and anaerobic techniques. To achieve these benefits of swimming, the individual will learn about stroke mechanics, breathing patterns and establishing proper stroke rhythm. To acquire fitness through aerobic and anaerobic techniques, the individual will understand the concepts of distance and interval swimming.

  
  • MOVP 0188 - Modern Jazz Dance II


    Credits: 1

    Further refinement and continuation of jazz styles including lyric and percussive. Continued emphasis on performance of choreographed routines, mastery of isolations and syncopations.

  
  • MOVP 0195 - Special Topics in Water or Land Skills


    Credits: 1

    This course is an introduction to water-based activities such as whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, or stand up paddle-boarding or land-based sports such as ice climbing, back-country skiing, or mountaineering.  If it is a water-based activity, students will develop efficient paddling skills in a moving water environment.  Reading the water and trip planning will also be covered.  If it is a land-based activity students will develop efficient climbing and/or skiing skills in a back-country environment.  This course will involve field trips.  Fees may be required.

    An overview of species counterpoint will lead to a study of tonal counterpoint in the style of the 18th Century. Analysis of representative works will complement the written work in two to four voices, culminating in efforts in such forms and techniques as the invention, canon, invertible counterpoint, and fugue.
