ENGL 0323 - The American Novel Credits: 3
Students focus on the novel as a way of understanding the stories, language, and characters that mark us as particularly American, and how the form of the novel serves to reflect the most intimate public and private desires and conflicts of our culture. Discussions are situated in historical contexts, literary movements, and in the biographical details about the authors. Students consider how language, form and narrative strategies have been deployed and adapted to changing times, politics and mores. Readings spanning the 19th through the 21st centuries may include examples of literary Realism, Naturalism, Postmodernism, Modernist collage, stream of consciousness, the Beat Generation, satire, and foundational genre novels.
Prerequisites: ENGL 0101
