EGST 0353 - Unmasking the School to Prison Pipeline

Credits: 3

This course focuses on the school-to-prison pipeline which is a nationwide system of local, state, and federal education and public safety policies that pushes students out of school and into the criminal justice system. This system disproportionately affects youth of color and youth with disabilities. Inequities in areas such as school discipline, policing practices, and high-stakes testing contribute to the pipeline. The goal of this course is to explore the phenomena of the school-to-prison pipeline. Where are the stops along this pipeline? What does its existence reveal to us about race and poverty in the United States? Exploration of educational policy, the prison industrial complex, and the history of structural inequality are central to the course. Students will be able to articulate definitions and perform analysis of this system and address historical conditions which created it along with strategies for dismantling the pipeline.

Prerequisites: EGST 0101  or EGST 0102 .
