GPS 0349 - Political Ecology/Environmental Justice Credits: 3
Political ecology combines an appreciation for the biological and physical aspects of environmental issues with the rigorous analysis of environmental politics. Political ecologists explore the ways that environmental issues are always social and political issues as well, characterized by unequal power relationships and the complexities of race, class, gender, and ethnicity. Environmental justice refers to the social movements and community-based activism that have emerged in response to the disproportionate suffering of poor communities, indigenous peoples, black and other communities of color, from pollution and other forms of environmental degradation, climate change, and lack of access to healthy food. This course draws on the theoretical frameworks of political ecology to illuminate and explore the struggle for environmental justice.
