GPS 0221 - Geography of Beer and Wine Credits: 3
This course examines the physical, economic, political, and cultural processes which shape the production and consumption of beer and wine across local and global scales. Particular emphasis will focus on how beer and wine are a unique expression of the geographical concept of place. In particular, students will examine how spatial variations in the combination of climate, soil, terrain, latitude, style of processing, and cultural practices come together to create a unique product embedded in place. Key themes considered will include the diffusion of beer and wine production and consumption over time and space; the significance of place, especially through the concepts of terroir and geographical indications; the environmental controls on grape, hop, and grain production, and how breweries and wineries reflect important elements of the cultural and economic landscapes of a locality. While students will learn about beer and wine styles from different places around the world, they also will be introduced to key issues and spatial patterns that influence the beer and wine geography in New England.
