ART 0364 - Ceramic Chemistry Credits: 3
This class explores the science and chemistry of clay along with its related ceramics materials and various kiln firing processes. Assignments and lectures emphasize the theory and practice of formulating clay bodies and glazes, testing for various firing ranges, color, and textural possibilities with the goal of having students develop a vocabulary of materiality and process for use in their own studio work. In addition to the building and firing of experimental kilns, an understanding of the department’s gas and electric kilns will be emphasized to familiarize students with their operation from loading to maintenance and repair.
Prerequisites: ART 0281 Wheel Throwing, or ART 0304 Ceramics 2, or permission from the instructor.
